The 14u New York Royals team kicked off their AAU season last weekend in a very competitive bracket at the WPA Bruins Tip-off Tournament in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Hazell Nickerson, a 5’10 forward, had creative moves, finished around the basket and battled for rebounds with her teammate, Lily Carroll, throughout the tournament. Kendall Parker, a 5’7 guard, also had a big weekend as she pushed the ball in transition, drove often and finished strong at the rim and looked to create for teammates Ava Amorese and Eily Hubler. Both Ava and Eily executed some big outside shots throughout the weekend. Overall, this team did many things well including moving the ball in transition on offense and playing unselfish basketball. One example of the unselfish play was in the game against Legendz Black. The guards looked to enter the ball into the post players. If they did not have anything the ball was kicked back out to the open guards. The post players then worked hard to repost and get in better position. They ended the tournament 1-3 but greatly progressed in each game, played hard, and never gave up. The 14u’s are back in the gym this week and some will be participating at the Live at the Nook Tournament (April 23-25).
